Our Mission
Our mission is to provide safe, clean, modern apartments to low income senior citizens and disabled individuals with mobility impairments.
A ministry of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, we are strive to be caring, compassionate, and enhance the lives of our residents.
Our History
- In the 1970's, the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, began to research possible ways to utilize their property for a housing project for low-income elderly and disabled individuals. A Building Committee was established with Sr. Mary Philip Kiehlmeier as Chair.
- In September 1979 HUD approved the proposal and construction began in June of 1980. With the expertise of a number of Sisters and lay advisors, especially James Spiegel, realtor, Sr. Mary and committee oversaw the construction of the three story, low rise building of 75 units. Construction was complete in 16 months.
- In September of 1981, the Sister's vision became reality when Benetwood Apartments opened the doors.
- Situated on nine acres of rolling woods our campus was constructed and developed to meet the needs of low and moderate income persons and handicapped individuals with mobility impairments.

Benetwood Apartment's 75 apartments are approved for applicants who qualify under FHA's 202/8 Program.

Our Community
Not long after Benetwood Apartments opened its doors in 1981, it was filled with Residents greeting one another, forming friendships, and planning small social gatherings and activities. With the help of the management team, Benetwood was creating a welcoming, active community.
In 1984, a formal Resident Council was formed by the Residents, for the purpose of gathering input and ideas, organizing, and raising funds for social events and activities. This Council over the years evolved and was named CORE (Creating Opportunities for Resident Enrichment).
Today, this group meets monthly and all Residents are invited/encouraged to participate. Through the dedicated work of Resident Volunteers, traditional events such as the Holiday Dinner, Summer Hot Dog Roast, Corn Roast, and Fun Days are made possible.
involvement in CORE enables Residents to stay active in a community environment of friends and neighbors.
